New York Post Apology

Here's the sorry excuse of an apology posted in today's New York Post by Chairman Rupert Murdoch:

As the Chairman of the New York Post, I am ultimately responsible for what is printed in its pages. The buck stops with me.

Last week, we made a mistake. We ran a cartoon that offended many people. Today I want to personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted.

Over the past couple of days, I have spoken to a number of people and I now better understand the hurt this cartoon has caused. At the same time, I have had conversations with Post editors about the situation and I can assure you - without a doubt - that the only intent of that cartoon was to mock a badly written piece of legislation. It was not meant to be racist, but unfortunately, it was interpreted by many as such.

We all hold the readers of the New York Post in high regard and I promise you that we will seek to be more attuned to the sensitivities of our community.

Take a look at the recent spoof of the NY Post's offensive cartoon:

I am not sure how I feel about this. It still makes me quite uncomfortable. Like just adding fuel to the fire. At some point we have to uphold a certain standard of integrity and feeding energy into something that was obviously offensive and inconsiderate only makes matters worse in the grand scheme of things. I'm not necessarily all for arguing whats wrong or right about this but let me know what you guys think?

  1. haha it still makes no sense...and doesn't atone for the fact that the original is a historically sensitive archetype of a racial group unlike a monkey in a kkk hood...

peace, i just can't stay away :) My issue with this is that black people in this country have always been portrayed has apes. I truly feel like the editors and writers at NY Post are aware of this but it just did not matter, it's an on going struggle. The fact that they apologized means nothing to me. I think the NY Post is a horrible news paper anyway...

  3. i don't remember the original having a KKK hood, but either way the apology is disgustingly inadequate. really? "the buck stops with me?" there is such an overtone of frustration as if to say "for all you ignorant people who 1) like obama, 2) like the stimulus package, and or 3) like black people, I'm sorry because you give us money."

    shame...

  5. What? I am so surprised that they actually apologized. I'm glad Murdoch finally came to his senses.
